2008-08-11 - Oh no, not ANOTHER one!

Like so many other Anita Blake fans, I have grown steadily disillusioned with the series, which took a definite nosedive with Obsidian Butterfly. I am so not a prude, but sex just for the sake of writing in a sex scene doesn't cut it after the 4000th time. I really need some plot, some character development and lack of repetition to go along with the steamy stuff. And I would LOVE to have an intimate scene, limited to one or two "people", like the early, wonderful scenes with Richard and Jean-Claude. I'm not sure what's going through Miss Hamilton's mind except trying to rake in the dough. IMO, save your money and borrow the books from the library -- you'll save yourself the clutter and the wasted money, and support a great institution like the Public Library System. It's really sad when a beloved series goes bad. (I'd also recommend saving your hard-earned money on the other LKH series, too. Blech.)

2008-08-11 - Slight reprieve?

A "little" less concentration on sex for its own sake than in the last few, but it appears that Hamilton will never get back to the plot-driven wonderfulness of the first 8-9 novels. From now on I'll stop buying, and read any further installments from the library. Zombie-raising and vampire-hunting are now apparently history. There's no question that the biggest mistake Hamilton ever made with this series was the invention of the "ardeur." It's led her off on a sex-for-no-damn-plot-reason-at-all tangent that's left most of her fans walking away in disgust. I always thought that she created the parallel Princess Merrie series just to get all of the sex writing out of her system, to keep it from bleeding into Anita Blake stories. Fat chance! Now it appears sex is all she wants to write anymore.

2008-08-10 - good read

I almost didn't buy this book because of the bad reviews. Ms. Hamilton writes in a flawless manner. I can never put her books down and find myself trying to slow down so I can savor the book. This does not happen with most authors. I'm glad I got it and can't wait for the next one.

2008-08-09 - That's it for me

I am done. Done with this ridiculous excuse for a series. I am a book junkie. I read everything from sleazy romances, through steaming hot erotica, to gory fantasy, though there are a few books I can claim bored me to tears, but this one is, as of today, at the top of that short list. I couldn't even make it through the fifth chapter. As a self-respecting, book-loving woman I simply cannot, and more importantly, will not continue to torture my mind with that absurd plot-deprived junk. I mean, how ludicrous can this incoherent babbling disguised as a book get? Just the dialogue that, I suppose, served as an introduction to the book had me wondering whether LKH was on drugs while writing it. "Oh, Jason I am so very sorry your EVIL bitch of a girlfriend made you have only normal sex, and in bed of all places! How could she?! And she wants you to have sex with her alone? How evil can a person get! But, do not worry, you can always f*ck my brains out. What are friends for?" Whether to laugh or cry, I really cannot decide.
And the sex scene? If I weren't so busy being turned off and disturbed by it, I would have been rolling on the floor with hysterical laughter. And I am not talking about the BDSM as an idea and essence, hell I usually like a little top/bottom dynamic. But LKH is painfully oblivious to such things. Enough as a safe word? Come on! A safe word is supposed to be something that wouldn't usually come up during sex so thing don't get confusing. Enough? Ha! Yes in deed, enough already! Enough of this mind-numbing stupidity, enough of this complete waste of paper and ink. Just Enough. Stop with the horribly bad porn and let's move on. Isn't it time for this sex-starved flame thing to get under control? It's so six books ago!
I am never, and I mean NEVER, paying one more cent for an LKH book. There are far too many good writers out there for me, or anyone for that matter, to waste time and money to read LKH's sex fantasies. Ugh, I feel dirty...

2008-08-08 - Disappointing

What a disappointment. This author is capable of so much more. The plot is weak, the story line rambles, and who is this Anita Blake? Certainly not the person the readers fell in love with. It's all well and good to say that charaters have to grow but let's be realistic here. If any one of us made such a drastic deportment from ourselves the people we love would have us locked up. Of course, when you surround yourself whipped monsters I guess it's easy to get away with just about anything. I have a feeling these books have become little more then a sounding board for Ms. Hamilton to vent and lecture all those people who would never pay attention otherwise. I think I have most likely put the last dollar I'll ever spend on one of her books in her pocket already.
