2008-08-19 - Different but enjoyable

The Host was hard for me to get into. It starts off very confusing, and I probably wouldn't have gone further if my sister hadn't recommended it (she and I have the same tastes) and if I hadn't liked the Twilight saga. Actually, I probably never would have gotten it. It sounded too weird. Anyways, the beginning is rough. Confusing and kinda weird. Very sci-fi. The book, for me, only picked up when Melanie would show Wanderer her memories of Jamie and Jared, which were not nearly often enough. Finally, though, once Wanderer made it to the caves, the book was really exciting, and I could hardly put it down for a second. I cried a lot. I was torn, not knowing what should happen. I was soooooo glad for the happy ending. I love happy endings! I really wish there would have been more scenes with Mel and Jared when she was actually Mel; not Mel AND Wanderer. It was obvious that Jared and Melanie loved each other, but we didn't get a lot of story on them. Not enough for me.
One trite point...why Wanda??? Ugh! That's worse than Reneesme:)

2008-08-19 - The Host: A Novel

I enjoyed the book very much and found it engrossing to the point of staying up till the wee early morning hours to finish it.
Some have said they have trouble with the first couple of chapters but I didn't and I would recomend it... I Do hope that there will be a sequel...

2008-08-18 - Loved the book!

The Host was a great book, somewhat related to the series 'The Animorphs', but much better.

The only thing that irked me in this book was Ian. He cared absolutely nothing for Melanie, or her feelings when he was kissing her body (which was being controlled by a more niave and less angry person), and if he and Wanda had had a marriage/relationship, it would have been rape in a way. I hated Ian, and if I were Melanie, the first thing I would have done with Wanda out is punch Ian as hard as I could.

The book was dragging in the first part of the book, but was nevertheless great.

2008-08-18 - Great beginning and end - middle put me to sleep

This book is essentially Heinlein's "Puppet Masters" rewritten with female leads and a love story thrown in, or a few love stories. The set up is great, very interesting. The earth has been taken over by silver centipede-like alien parasites that wrap around our spines and brains and not only control us, but essentially suppress or wipe out our consciousness but yet retain all our memories.

This story focusses on one of these aliens that has lived on many worlds for more lifetimes than most any other of her race. Wandered is inserted into the adult body of a rebel fighter, a rogue human female that has avoided "implantation". This human is stronger than most and Wanderer finders herself battling for control & subject to Melanie's past love and emotions. I loved the description of all the words Wanderer has visited. The ending was a little to neatly wrapped up but it is a love story so, the focus is more on the relationship that the actual invasion of the earth.

What I didn't like was the middle section. It dragged painfully slow. Yes, I know, its a love story its several love stories, its a relationship book, some say a "chick sci fi" book. I guess if I had know that how much i might have passed on it.

My big problem with the book was the aliens themselves. They called themselves "souls" and were supposed to be the kindest, gentlest, most caring race in the universe but they sublimated and destroyed the consciousness of billions of humans without a 2nd thought. They planned & carried out the medical experimentation and enslavement of the entire human race and yet we're supposed to buy that they are kind and gentle beings. That they were only acting according to how they evolved and grew?

That sort of blew it for me.

2008-08-18 - loved it!

I really enjoyed this book, when I first got it i was afraid I wouldn't like it because I loved the twilight books, but this one was so GReat a really good read and it was much more interseting!
